Artisanal Fishing vs. Solid Waste Production: A Case Study Conducted on the Coast of São Paulo
Abstract
Fishing activity on the beaches of Guarauzinho and Arpoador, in Parque Estadual do Itinguçu/Mosaico de Unidades de Conservação Jureia-Itatins, Peruíbe, south coast of São Paulo State is subsistence and artisanal. Despite being a non-commercial activity, but a great importance to the Caiçara Community, fishing waste impacts local marine life. This study aimed to identify and quantify the residues included in this activity. The collection method in both beaches was 100m x 300m transects. Total 52 items (fifty-two). Items collected as pieces of Styrofoam represent 44.23% and pieces of plastic rope 32.69%. To reduce the impacts generated, it is necessary to reuse, recycling and Environmental Education with initiatives that involve all social actors in these locations.
