The importance of evaluation of water from lowering of water table in Brazil: the case of the city of Santos SP

Abstract


The municipality of Santos / SP has been shown in recent years, a great economic potential for real estate expansion. During the construction works of buildings, the presence of groundwater may be an inconvenience during construction, thus requiring extraction of this water through the process of lowering of water table, whose waters are discharged into the environment without prior treatment, can reach the estuarine system. The drawdown is used in many Latin American countries, the United States and Europe, and can bring also environmental consequences to estuarine systems of various countries. This study aimed to characterize preliminarily by physico-chemical and microbiological water from three distinct works, which they performed the lowering of water table in the city of Santos/SP, and dismissed the waters in urban drainage channels city. The two sample collections occurred in 02 and July 10, 2013 , and were selected and analyzed variables turbidity , oxygen ( DO), surfactants , pH , conductivity, dissolved phosphate , oil and grease ( OG ) , ammonia ( NH3 ) , phenols and E.coli. Results demonstrated the poor quality of this water drained, with direct consequences for public health and environment of the city of Santos/SP.
