Assessment of adverse biological effects of antihypertensive drugs Losartan and Valsartan on urchin Lytechinus variegatus (ECHINODERMATA, ECHINOIDEA).

The antihypertensive drugs are widely used worldwide, with evidence of the occurrence of these compounds as Losartan and Valsartan in low concentrations in environmental matrices and domestic effluents. Due to these facts, this study evaluated the effects of drugs Losartan and Valsartan through toxicity tests to assess the chronic effects on sea-urchin Lytechinus variegatus. Chronic assays were performed according to NBR 15350/2012, for pharmaceuticals Losartan and Valsartan, which showed values ​​NOEC (No Observed Effect Concentration - 50 mg.L-1) and (CEO Concentration Effect observed - 70 mg L-1) for Losartan and (NOEC - 12.5 mg. L-1 and CEO - 25 mg L-1) for Valsartan, differences that could be justified by the values ​​of Kow these two molecules. These results demonstrate the unlikely occurrence of ecological risk of these drugs in the environment, because it is, in effect concentrations higher than those already reported in the aquatic environment.
