Microbiological characterization of the urban drainage channels of Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in high and low pluviosity periods

Abstract


The  beach of Santos receives the rainwater that are thrown overboard by surface drainage channels of the city, especially in periods of high pluviosity, which could compromise the quality of bathing waters, especially the beaches. The aim of this study was to perform the microbiological characterization of the water of the seven urban drainage channels of Santos (São Paulo, Brazil) in high and low pluviosity periods, through the determination of total coliforms and Escherichia coli. The analysis revealed that the samples collected in both periods presented values ​​of total coliforms and E. coli above the limits established by the Brazilian legislation. The results also indicate the presence of illegal sewer connections to the channels may significantly affect the environmental quality of the beaches of Santos.
