Application of corrosion inhibitors in oil and gas industry

Luis Paulo Garcia, Aldo Ramos Santos

In the petroleum and gas industry corrosion inhibitors are used primarily to counteract the corrosive processes related to the action of H2S, CO2 and acids used in stimulation operations reservoir and / or removal of fouling of pipes. The majority of inhibitors used has nitrogenous groups, however other non-nitrogened inhibitors containing phosphorus, sulfur or oxygen atoms, although less often, are also used. Different techniques for applying the corrosion inhibitor system in the production of oil and gas may be used depending on the application point. This paper aims to review existing literature on key concepts and best practices related to the use of corrosion inhibitors in the oil industry.
