THE ROLE OF NURSING IN SUICIDE PREVENTION AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Suicide among young people is a serious public health problem, multifactorial in nature and increasing in incidence. This study aimed to analyze the role of nursing in suicide prevention among young people and to identify the main risk factors associated with suicidal behavior in this population. This is an integrative literature review, descriptive in nature, with searches in the PubMed/MEDLINE and SciELO databases, covering publications from 2013 to 2026. The results showed a progressive increase in suicide and self-harm rates among young Brazilians, associated with mental disorders and social determinants. Nursing stands out for its closeness to the patient, acting in the early identification of risk signs, qualified listening and humanized care, based on the therapeutic relationship. It is concluded that professional qualification and empathetic, evidence-based care practices are essential for suicide prevention in this population.
