The detection of pollutants in aquatic environments is of great importance for the monitoring of water quality. The Raman spectroscopy is effective, consisting of a technique that allows the concomitant identification of different compounds, providing the results in a shorter time and at a lower operating cost, besides not generating waste. This article focuses on the detection of the nitrate ion in the water. The analysis of an authentic nitrate standard was carried out on a portable Raman dispersive system with an excitation of 830 nm. The Raman spectrum of nitrate presented peak at 1048 cm ̄ ¹, compatible with data previously described in the literature for the nitrate ion. The results have opened up new perspectives for the use of Raman spectroscopy in environmental analyses.
