Preliminary assessment of the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of the extracts obtained from marine seaweed Ulva Lactuca (Chlorophyta, ulvaceae) from São Paulo State Coast (Brazil)

Recent studies have demonstrated the biological activity of several metabolites produced by algae allowing the use of these organisms as a direct source of drugs or inspiring the synthesis of new the substances from discovering of their molecular structures. The present study aimed the preliminary chemical characterization of different extracts obtained from green seaweed Ulva lactuca and also the evaluation of the antioxidant activity of these extracts. The algae were collected in Ilha das Palmas located in the city of Santos (São Paulo, Brazil) and subjected to a fractionated extraction with hexane, chloroform, methanol and water, respectively. The components present in each extract were analyzed by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and the evaluation of the antioxidant potential was performed using the method of DPPH, revealing the presence of a component with antioxidant potential in the methanol extract   (Rf = 0,17). Considering such biological activity, total phenolic substances were quantified with the use of Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and it was observed higher concentrations of phenolic substances for the methanol extract (10.91 mg/g). The results obtained in this study create perspectives for the discovering of new drugs with antioxidant potential with components of intermediate polarity present in Ulva lactuca.
