HERBÁRIO DO MUSEU NACIONAL, RIO DE JANEIRO (R)
Abstract
Abstract: The Herbarium of the National Museum was founded in 1831, the first herbarium in Brazil. It has an estimated 550,000 especimens, which are representative of all Brazilian biomes. Among the most important collections, we highlight those carried out between the XIX century and mid-twentieth as, for example, of Sellow (1815-1817), Riedel (1826-1828), Damasio (1870-1905), Freire Allemão (1859-1861), Glaziou (1861-1895), Regnell (1840-1884) and Loefgren (1874-1877). Regional collections in the Southeastern Brazil such as Sampaio and Segadas-Vianna are also relevant, as well as collections of Ducke and Prance, in the Amazon region. The collection consists mostly of vascular plant specimens, as well as historical and recent samples of avascular plants and fungi, slides, photos and nomenclatural types. The herbarium serves Brazilian and foreign researchers and students by sending materials or consultations. In addition to the routine activities of the curatorial team, the collection is being digitized and going through imaging process by scholars (CNPq and FAPERJ), trainees and students, and the data is available through the Virtual Herbarium of Flora and Fungi of Brazil, SiBBr, and GBIF and DigBio.
