SADOMASOCHISM AND CATHOLICISM: A HISTORICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

This study analyzes the intersections between sadomasochism and Catholicism, focusing on symbolic articulations between pain, submission, and spirituality. The objective is to understand how consensual BDSM practices dialogue with Christian religious rituals. The methodology used was a systematic literature review of academic works published between 2015 and 2025. Results indicate connections between religious ethics and dissident erotic practices, as well as a reduction in psychiatric pathologization. It concludes that the theme challenges boundaries between faith and sexuality, revealing possibilities of subjective reinterpretation
