Abstract

This study was conducted in the community of Monte Cabrão, a neighborhood in the continental area of ​​the municipality of Santos, on the coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The area is inhabited by approximately 500 residents, with specific customs and knowledge regarding the use of local flora species. Ten people were interviewed using the Snowball method, with their knowledge of plant use recorded, and botanical specimens were collected for later identification and herborization at the HUSC of the Universidade Santa Cecília. Cultural transmission is oblique. Twenty-one plant families were recorded, encompassing 36 species indicated by the interviewees. The family with the largest number of species cited was Myrtaceae (6 spp.). The two most frequent types of use were medicinal and food.
