Abstract

Smoking is a health problem all over the world and in all age groups, including the elderly. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of smoking in the elderly. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 300 elderly users of Basic Health Units in the city of Santos / SP. Questions regarding smoking were asked. Statistical analysis was performed as descriptive. Of the 300 elderly people evaluated, only 16 (5.4%) of the elderly were smokers, 82 elderly were ex-smokers (27.3%) and, finally, 202 elderly people (67.3%) never smoked during their lives. Thus, it was possible to conclude that it was the low prevalence of smoking in the study population.
