Abstract
This paper aims to determine the cause that led to the failure of a geared motor shaft. The fracture of the component occurred during the transport operation of packaged Wheat flour through conveyor belt. The studies were employed according to ABNT 15454: 2007 and NBR 13284: 1995 norms, as well as the usual methodologies used in fault analysis, such as General Visual Inspection, Macrofractography and Metallography. Which factors were most relevant and led to shaft fracture, and the predominant factor is linked to the accumulated stress concentration mainly at the shaft diameter reduction site (sharp corner), due to the manufacturing with inadequate radius of agreement, which caused failure through the fatigue process.
