Abstract

The elements Mg and Cu, when added to aluminum, allow obtaining a metallic alloy with better mechanical properties, because to the formation of high resistance precipitates. In this work, an Al-4%Cu-1%Mg alloy was solidified in a transient heat extraction regime and, subsequently, a microstructural characterization was carried out to identify the degree of refining and the type of crude structure obtained. The dendritic microstructure was found throughout the ingot, and close to the mold region, primary dendritic spacing values were in the order of 25 µm and, in the region 40 mm from the metal/mold interface, values of approximately             100 µm.
