Abstract

Visceral fat plays a relevant role in the risk of CV disease (CVD), specifically, it appears to be the link between adipose tissue and insulin resistance (IR), which characterizes metabolic syndrome (MS). Different from subcutaneous fat, visceral fat has a close relationship with glucose tolerance, hyperinsulinemia, hypertriglyceridemia and arterial hypertension. In this study, we investigated the distribution of visceral adiposity, measured by waist circumference, as a risk marker, in a sample divided into three age groups of 20 years each containing men and women among 2,475 patients selected in cardiology offices. The results show that the increase in abdominal circumference is very prevalent, present in more than 50% of men and in more than 60% of women, configuring an increased metabolic risk profile in both sexes. It is imperative to encourage lifestyle changes among the population to control the spread of obesity, metabolic syndrome and CV Risk Factors.
