Abstract
LDL-C-lowering therapy with statins is effective and safe in reducing CV risk. Based on this evidence, Cholesterol Treatment Guidelines have proposed absolute therapeutic goals and percentage reductions in LDL according to stratified individual CV risk. An emerging concept, established through studies using intravascular ultrasound, the demonstration that the progression of atherosclerosis can be attenuated, the plaques stabilized and the regression of the atheroma volume achieved, confirms the linear association between LDL levels achieved with treatment and the progression of coronary atherosclerosis
