Abstract

Breastfeeding is a process recognized for its health benefits for both the baby and the mother, but many women face difficulties in maintaining it, especially in the first months. This study aimed to investigate the role of nursing in encouraging and supporting breastfeeding, identifying the challenges faced by mothers. The methodology used was a narrative review, with searches conducted between April and May 2025 in databases such as SciELO, LILACS, and PubMed, using keywords such as “breastfeeding,” “nursing,” and “support for mothers.” Articles published between 2015 and 2025 in Portuguese that addressed the topic were selected. The results show that breast milk contributes to disease prevention and the baby’s development, while nursing support—through prenatal guidance, postpartum care, and health education—is essential for successful breastfeeding. However, barriers such as practical difficulties experienced by mothers and limitations in the work of nurses, including lack of time and training, still hinder effective practice. Thus, the study highlights the need for strategies that improve support for mothers, taking into account the specificities of the Brazilian context.
